Governing Body Spotlight

Co-Chair of the DACH CDAO Community

David Power

Head Data Governance & Risk

Credit Suisse

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I moved from Standard Chartered Bank to Credit Suisse in Singapore to manage a reference data program. This was my first role which focused exclusively on data. That led in later years to delivering the Risk Data Aggregation and Reporting program, BCBS239 for Credit Suisse in Zürich. It was a natural path from that role to becoming the Chief Data Officer for Risk for the bank. In my current role at Bank Julius Bär, I am lucky enough to leverage these learnings and focus on Data Analytics and associated Data Science.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

I believe that diversity is really important when building a team. I do my best to hire people who are very different from me.

With disruption being a key theme of the past few years, where do you see your role as a CDAO going in the next 1-2 years?

Acceptance of the CDAO role has accelerated in the past few years due to regulatory pressure. Now more than ever, the CDAO role needs to be about the tangible value its mandate brings to the business.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the role as a CDAO?

Listen. All data geeks sometimes speak different languages. Rather than educating people on yours, learn theirs before you attempt to communicate your goals.

Tell us 3 fun facts about yourself.

  • One of my favorite things to do is sailing a dingy in a wind almost too strong for me to handle.
  • If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be… right here with my wife, four children and our labradoodle.
  • I would love to see how Natural Language Processing would handle James Joyce’s Ulysses.
