William Chiu is the VP of Predictive Modeling at National MI, a U.S.-based private mortgage insurance company, where he is responsible for estimating future insurance claims from policyholders. Before joining National MI, William built and managed a team of data scientists for eight years at a major financial institution, focusing on credit loss estimation. He brings over 15 years of experience in financial services, predictive analytics, and credit risk modeling. He earned an MS in Analytics from Northwestern University and a BA in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. A fun fact about William is that he enjoys professional wrestling events, admiring their athletic and dramatic performances.

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
I studied economics in college and graduated around the time of the Great Financial Crisis. The crisis sparked my interest in credit risk management, as l wanted to learn how to assess and mitigate the impact of extreme events on the financial system. I gained experience in scenario analysis and stress testing, which helped me improve my predictive modeling skills. These skills are essential for my current role at National MI, where I work on estimating credit losses and managing risk exposure.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
My guiding principle is to identify and empower talent: hiring skilled individuals and providing them the space and resources to excel in their roles.
What is the key to success for someone just starting out in your C-level role?
Focus on collaborating and solving genuine business problems rather than being sidetracked by the allure of new technology.
How do you measure success as a leader?
Success as a leader is gauged by developing my team's skills and ability to collaborate with other departments. The most rewarding aspect of being a leader is when I help my team members outgrow their current roles and welcome new challenges and opportunities.
