Michael Sloan

Michael Sloan is the VP of Human Resources / CHRO at CommonSpirit Health, and he has been in this role since January 2020. He says he most enjoys the “people” aspect of his job, meeting so many individuals with different backgrounds.

In his personal life, Michael has 4 children and enjoys spending time at their sports activities. One of his family goals is to visit all the US National Parks.

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I was a practicing attorney before finding my path in Human Resources. My legal background has helped me immensely throughout my HR career.
 

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

Let your team know your expectations, and then give them autonomy to accomplish it.
 

What is the greatest challenge CHROs face today, and how are you addressing it?

Staffing is one of our greatest challenges, and we are constantly trying to think outside the box in hiring and retaining critical talent.
 

What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CHRO?

Know your business in all aspects.
 

How do you measure success as a leader?

For me, it’s the impact you have on your people in making them the best they can be.
