Ed Hutt started his career as a professional management consultant, executing and then leading business strategy and performance projects around the world. This gave him a strong methodological background which he still uses today.
From here, he followed the trend of consulting, going into technology and systems implementation and led major business units for IBM Global Services, Capgemini and Atos.
In the third stage of his career, he held senior IT leadership roles as an IT Director or the CIO for organisations such as Fitness First, Morrison's, SIG, Capita Customer Management, and now Impellam PLC.

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
Like many similar scenarios over the years, it started with somebody I know asking if I was available. I firmly believe that our technology and business leadership skills are transferable between sectors and situations, and that it is the diverse ideas that help organisations breakout of their conventional, accepted ways of thinking and acting on situations.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
Delegation and trust. There is no exclusive ownership of good ideas.
With disruption being a key theme of recent years, where do you see the CIO role going in the next 1-2 years?
Less 'a few big things' and more 'micro innovations.’ But a lot of them, all contributing to the earnings and profits being enhanced.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a CIO?
Take time to spot talent that you can see (not what somebody else gives you as their opinion) then give them the space to develop in their own way.
What is the value of joining an Evanta community?
Networking - sometimes with old friends and sometimes with new ones. It is always valuable to try out new ideas on new people and road test things before doing it for real.
