Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
Leveraging my foundational technology experience gained in the VAR and Financial sectors, including roles at Thrive Networks and Western Asset Management, and further developed through strategic technology leadership in the entertainment industry and at Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, I transitioned into cybersecurity at Avery Dennison, ultimately leading to my current role as Vice President, Information Security Officer, where I direct global cybersecurity initiatives.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
My guiding principle for leadership rests on the "three Ts" – trust, transparency, and teamwork – because they collectively foster an environment where open communication, shared goals, and mutual accountability drive collective success.
What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?
My primary challenge is adapting to the rapid pace of technological change, including AI and evolving cyber threats, in a more digitally connected world. To address this, we're focusing on agile strategies, workforce reskilling in key technologies, robust cybersecurity, ethical AI governance, and strategic partnerships to stay ahead of disruptions and ensure long-term resilience.
What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?
To thrive in a new C-level position, prioritize these: really learn the company culture, build solid relationships throughout the organization, and understand the specific risks the company faces. These steps are crucial for effective leadership and achieving your goals.
How do you measure success as a leader?
As a leader, I measure success through a holistic view that encompasses the success of my team, the overall performance of the company, and my ability to enable the business to thrive, including effectively managing risks. This means:
Team Success: Are my team members growing, achieving their goals, and feeling empowered? Do they work together effectively?
Company Success: Are we meeting our strategic objectives, achieving financial targets, and demonstrating sustainable growth?
Enabling the Business: Am I removing roadblocks, fostering innovation, and creating an environment where the business can adapt and succeed in the long term, while proactively identifying and mitigating potential threats?
Ultimately, my success is inextricably linked to the success of those around me and the organization as a whole, and is also dependent on my ability to effectively navigate and minimize risks.
