Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
Since 1997, I have been active in various security related roles starting in Germany, as part of the global retail organization and most recently as global CISO of the Ingenico Group. This journey gave me a deep insight into the development and implementation of holistic security strategies for multinational companies and thus laid the foundations for managing and transforming global cybersecurity organizations, including setting up and optimizing management systems and industry standards.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
As a dynamic leadership expert, I bring operational and strategic skills in equal measure and, even in a C-level role, I value a hands-on mentality in order to tackle both technical and business challenges in a practical way. In short words "lead by example."
What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?
The role of the CISO in Europe is still evolving so that the word ‘Chief’ in the title is finally justified. However, this also requires significant changes in reporting, as it is common practice for other C-level executives. So CISOs need to leave "the children's table at Christmas dinner."
What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?
Build your network, communicate the key principles of your strategic security program with all relevant stakeholders, ensure the strategy keeps aligned with and reflects the business strategies over time and once more keep people informed.
How do you measure success as a leader?
When my organization does everything right in autopilot mode, this shows a successful implementation of talent development and the creation of a working environment that fosters growth and strong values.
