Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
In my current role as Chief Information Security Officer for PHINIA Inc., I draw upon a foundational experience that began right out of college, working the IT helpdesk to provide safe and reliable IT services. Over the years, I have held various technology and security leadership positions, consistently focusing on leveraging innovative technologies to drive enhanced digital transformation in a secure, collaborative environment. This journey has equipped me with cross-vertical working knowledge in the Manufacturing, Energy, and Retail markets, where we have tackled topics such as strategic leadership, cybersecurity, ERP, and IT services implementation.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
One of my guiding leadership principles is to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within a secure and safe environment. By adopting new technologies and methodologies, we can drive transformative change, enhance operational efficiency, fortify our security posture, and achieve sustainable growth.
What is the greatest challenge security leaders face today, and how are you addressing it?
The most significant challenge in my role as Chief Information Security Officer at PHINIA Inc. is ensuring vigorous cybersecurity while driving digital transformation and advancing business goals. The increasing sophistication of cyber threats necessitates constant vigilance and proactive measures. We continue to address this by implementing advanced security protocols, conducting regular risk assessments, and fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness. Additionally, we leverage cutting-edge technologies such as AI and machine learning to enhance our defenses and streamline operations, ensuring that our digital transformation initiatives do not compromise data integrity and security.
What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?
The key to success for someone embarking on a C-level role is to remain open to new and diverse ideas. It is crucial to comprehend both the technological landscape and the business objectives. Building strong relationships with peers and stakeholders, fostering a culture of teamwork, and maintaining a strategic vision are essential. Additionally, focusing on effective communication, risk management, and leading by example will help navigate challenges and drive the organization forward. Prioritizing cybersecurity and staying updated with emerging technologies are also vital for long-term success.
How do you measure success as a leader?
I gauge my success as a leader through the engagement and satisfaction of my team and peers, the achievement of strategic goals, the fostering of innovation, and the receipt of positive stakeholder feedback. Additionally, I assess operational efficiency and the professional development of my team members.
